From Nashville roots to healthcare leader
Dr. Reginald W. Coopwood, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, is a distinguished physician, surgeon, and healthcare executive. He earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in 1985 and completed his general-surgery residency in 1990. After his residency, Dr. Coopwood joined Meharry's surgical faculty and practiced as a general surgeon in Nashville, laying the foundation for a remarkable career dedicated to healing and leadership.
A journey in leadership and community care
Dr. Coopwood transitioned from clinical practice to pivotal leadership roles, significantly impacting healthcare administration. In 2000, he became the Chief Medical Officer of Nashville General Hospital at Meharry, where he spearheaded efforts to improve patient care. His leadership journey continued as he was appointed CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority in 2005. His profound commitment to healthcare access and community well-being was further solidified when he moved to Memphis in 2010 to serve as President and CEO of Regional One Health, formerly known as The Regional Medical Center (The Med).

Dr. Coopwood's exemplary leadership in healthcare and his unwavering commitment to serving communities with historically limited access to medical care have garnered widespread recognition. His efforts to bridge healthcare disparities and elevate the standard of medical service earned him a well-deserved induction into the Tennessee HealthCare Hall of Fame in 2002. As a Meharry-trained surgeon who transitioned into major healthcare leadership, he has become one of Memphis's most important healthcare executives and a valuable instructor, personally contributing to the training of future medical professionals, including my own sibling.
