A courageous escape to freedom
Thornton Blackburn, born into slavery in Kentucky in 1812, met Lucie, who was also enslaved in Louisville. Their shared desire for freedom fueled a bold decision. In 1831, they embarked on a perilous journey, successfully escaping the bonds of slavery and reaching the promising lands of Detroit, Michigan. This act of bravery marked the beginning of their extraordinary fight for liberty.
Defying re-enslavement
The Blackburns' taste of freedom was tragically interrupted in 1833 when they were captured in Detroit, facing the grim prospect of being forced back into slavery. However, their spirit remained unbroken. Lucie, with quick thinking and courage, managed to escape her captors and cross into Canada. Simultaneously, a large group of Detroit residents, many from the vibrant Black community, rallied together to help Thornton escape custody, demonstrating the powerful community support for freedom seekers.
Building a new life in Canada
Reunited in Upper Canada, now Ontario, the Blackburns found refuge and new beginnings. Canadian officials refused to succumb to demands for their return to slavery, cementing their freedom. The couple eventually settled in Toronto, where Thornton's entrepreneurial spirit flourished. They established Toronto's first cab company, a remarkable achievement that not only provided them with a livelihood but also became a symbol of their success against all odds. Beyond their business, they actively supported the abolitionist movement, helping countless other freedom seekers on their journey. Canada officially recognized Thornton and Lucie Blackburn as National Historic Persons in 1999.
