Charles Meehan, a white man of Irish ancestry, and Hester Freeman Meehan, a Black woman from Canada, shared a love that began in Buxton, Ontario. They married in 1875 and later embarked on a challenging journey to Nebraska with their children. Their interracial marriage, illegal at the time, presented significant obstacles, yet their determination to build a life together never wavered.
Leaders of a new community
In Nebraska, The Meehans became pivotal leaders among a group of Black Canadian homesteaders. Charles actively encouraged other families from Canada to join them, leading to the establishment of the community of Dewitty, later known as Audacious. This settlement grew to become one of the largest and most successful Black homesteading communities in Nebraska, a testament to their vision and perseverance.
