The resilient community of Palmares
Palmares, also known as the "Quilombo dos Palmares," meaning "the community of Palmares" or "Palmares settlement," stands as one of the largest and most famous communities founded by Africans who escaped slavery in colonial Brazil. Beginning around 1605 and lasting for much of the 17th century, Palmares existed in northeastern Brazil, in the region that is now Alagoas and Pernambuco. It was actually a collection of settlements, or quilombos, where formerly enslaved Africans and their descendants lived, farmed, raised families, and defended themselves against Portuguese forces and slave hunters. This community was created in direct reaction to the brutal system of enslavement in Brazil, forming an organized, self-governing society built on the principles of freedom and mutual support.

One of the most famous leaders of Palmares was Zumbi dos Palmares, who became a powerful symbol of resistance to slavery.
