Born into bondage
Ona Judge was born into slavery around 1773 at Mount Vernon, the Virginia plantation of George and Martha Washington. The journey to Philadelphia
When George Washington became the first president of the United States, Ona traveled with the Washingtons to the nation's temporary capital in Philadelphia. The laws of Pennsylvania offered a glimmer of hope, stipulating that enslaved people brought into the state could claim their freedom after six months. The courageous escape
In 1796, Ona learned of Martha Washington's plan to give her away as a wedding gift to a relative. This revelation solidified her resolve to escape. Seizing an opportune moment, she waited until everyone was at the dinner table and simply slipped out the back door into the night. Her daring escape from the President's House in Philadelphia marked the beginning of her journey to true freedom. When interviewed about her escape from being enslaved, she simply said she wanted her freedom.
Life in freedom and lasting legacy
Ona Judge successfully made her way to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she began a new life. Despite several attempts by Washington to capture and return her, she remained free. She later married John Staines, a free black sailor and raised three children, and lived the rest of her life in New Hampshire, outliving both George and Martha Washington.
