Norfolk State University
Discover the enduring legacy, inspiring resilience, and transformative academic journey of Norfolk State University, a cornerstone of higher learning and empowerment founded during the Great Depression to open doors of opportunity in southeastern Virginia and beyond.

From humble beginnings to an independent pillar
Norfolk State University began in 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University, established during the depths of the Great Depression. It was created as a small institution dedicated to providing vital higher education opportunities for Black students in the Norfolk, Virginia area when segregation strictly limited access to college degrees. Showing remarkable perseverance and community support, the school became an independent junior college in 1942 under the name Norfolk Polytechnic College, setting the foundation for decades of educational advancement.

Growth into a thriving university
Through sustained vision and unwavering determination, the institution continued to broaden its academic programs and campus footprint. In 1956, the school became Norfolk State College, gaining degree-granting authority as a four-year college. Its progress culminated in 1979 when the institution officially achieved full university status and adopted its present name: Norfolk State University. Today, NSU stands proudly as a public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) celebrated for its robust offerings across education, business, the sciences, the arts, and numerous other fields.
