Kindergarten icebreakers

This is where our journey begins. Getting the attention of young people doesn't always have to take a lot, but the key is to get them thinking, talking about themselves and creating a work of art.

My favorite colors

Show a picture of an object in different colors and review the colors and their names with the class. The names of the color may be listed above or below the object.

Ask each child their names and ask them their favorite color.

After the introduction of each child have them write their name in that color and draw pictures using their favorite colors on a sheet of lined tablet paper.

Materials:

Chart showing the different colors and their names

Sheets of lined tablet paper

Several boxes of crayons

copy paper (optional)

*You may facilitate around the room to check for accuracy of their name that may be difficult for some to spell and encourage them to write as neat as they can on the lines.

My favorite animal

Show a picture of different animals. Call on the class to chorally identify each animal. Make sure that you have the picture of the animal that each child will identify.

Give students clues about an animal and let them guess.

(Call on a child to demonstrate the action of the animals and have the class to guess the animal.)

Examples:

I have four legs. I make a "baa" sound. What animal am I?

I can perch or sit on a tree. I make the sound "woooo". What animal am I?

I live around the lake. I can hop. What animal am I?

I love cheese. I make people say "eeeek". What animal am I?

Pass out paper and crayons. Let the children choose an animal and draw and color its picture.
