Born into enslavement on April 18, 1813, in New York City, James McCune Smith was raised in New York and eventually secured his freedom under New York's Emancipation Act. Possessing a sharp mind and an unwavering passion for science, he sought admission to American medical schools but was repeatedly denied entry solely because of his race. Refusing to let prejudice halt his purpose, Smith traveled across the Atlantic to Scotland to attend the prestigious University of Glasgow. In 1837, through immense dedication, he made history by becoming the very first African American to earn a formal medical degree.

Upon returning to New York, Dr. Smith established a bustling medical practice and pharmacy, providing compassionate care to his community. Yet his mission reached far beyond his clinic. A gifted writer and intellectual powerhouse, Dr. Smith worked closely with legendary orator Frederick Douglass, frequently contributing incisive articles and essays to Douglass's publications.
