Finding refuge under His wings
Lately, we have been immersed in the recent expiration of Nolan Wells and many others including Daniel Irving, Darryl Lowry, Trey Reed, and Lonn Hartman, who is currently in ICU with severe neck lacerations. Our parents teach us when we are young to be careful of our spaces. Everyone that smiles at us and spends time with us is not our friend. Although we cannot change the circumstances, we can know that God sees and knows and heals our hearts, and vengeance is His. God is our protection. Psalm 91:4 says, "He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart."
God, our refuge and strength
Know that God is your protection. Psalm 46:1 reminds us, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Nolan Wells, Darryl Lowery, Trey Reed, and Lonn Hartman are all black males. It is so important that we as black people know our history. My earthly, biological father (who is now deceased) used to say, "If you don't know your history, you are doomed to repeat it." We must teach our children "who we are and whose we are." The story of Africa, the transatlantic voyage, slavery, segregation and Jim Crow, redlining, and the drug epidemic must never die.
Embracing our black excellence
We are "black excellence." We are the inventors, the music, the language, African American Vernacular English (AAVE), the food, the dress and the physical features. We are the first people on Earth. We were created in God's image. Jesus, the son of God, was said to have, and I quote from the Bible, in the book of Revelation, the apostle John describes a symbolic vision of the resurrected Christ. He saw someone with hair "white like wool, as white as snow," eyes "like a flame of fire," feet "like burnished bronze," and a face "like the sun shining in full strength." Revelation 1:14-16.
Remembering and rising
RIP and get well soon to those young black males who are in critical condition and who lost their lives. We cannot "lose ourselves" trying to assimilate with others. My heart and condolences go out to the families. I sincerely hope that parents will teach their black children their history in this country and abroad. If this is done, the children will be armed with knowledge and information and it will straighten their paths.
