Pioneering spirit: Elizabeth Evelyn Wright's journey
Elizabeth Evelyn Wright was a pioneering African American educator and the visionary founder of what is now Voorhees University, a historically Black university in Denmark, South Carolina. Born on April 3, 1872, in Talbotton, Georgia, Wright overcame a childhood of poverty with an unshakeable resolve to obtain an education. At just 16, she traveled to Alabama to attend the Tuskegee Institute, where she was deeply influenced by Booker T. Washington's philosophy of education and vocational training. Her early life instilled in her a profound understanding of the transformative power of learning.
Founding a beacon of education
In 1897, after enduring severe racism, threats, and even arson attempts while striving to establish schools for Black children, Wright bravely founded the Denmark Industrial School in South Carolina. Her efforts were met with both resistance and remarkable success. The school experienced rapid growth and was later renamed Voorhees Industrial School, a testament to the significant financial assistance provided by philanthropist Ralph Voorhees and his wife. This institution eventually evolved into Voorhees College, which today stands proudly as Voorhees University, a lasting monument to Wright's educational legacy.
A life of impact, cut short
Elizabeth Evelyn Wright married Martin A. Menafee in 1906, but tragically, her remarkable life was cut short later that same year. She passed away on December 14, 1906, at the tender age of 34. Though she died too young to witness the full, prosperous contribution of her educational endeavors, her legacy lives on. She is buried on the Voorhees campus, a place forever touched by her vision and determination. Wright's story reminds us of the profound impact one individual can have, even within a tragically brief lifetime.
