Charles B. Brooks: An inventor's legacy

Born in Virginia in 1865, Charles B. Brooks later moved to Newark, New Jersey, where he worked as a porter for the Pullman Palace Car Company. While there, he dedicated himself to developing inventions that would make a tangible difference. His most notable invention, patented in 1896, was a significant improvement to the street sweeper. This innovative design featured rotating brushes that efficiently swept debris into a collection container, drastically improving street cleaning. Brooks also ingeniously designed the brushes to be replaceable with scrapers, allowing the same machine to clear snow, a revolutionary concept at a time when street cleaning was primarily a manual, labor-intensive task.
